     HTA Making Strides Team

HTA members joined other locals at the annual NYSUT Summer Leadership Conference in Erie, PA in mid- August.  Members had the pleasure of listening to keynote speaker; and NYSUT president; Melinda Person. The NYSUT campaign to "Fix Tier 6" was centerstage at this year's conference.

HTA Alert

As mentioned in previous communication, the anti-union organization, the Freedom Foundation, has engaged in a significant and coordinated drop campaign targeting our members.   The HTA and NYSUT want to equip our members with some helpful strategies should you find yourself a recipient of anti-union communication.

What should members do if they get a mailer or email?
  • We simply ask that they throw out any mailing they get, like they would any other junk mail.
  • For emails, they should unsubscribe or send to junk; do not reply.
  • In the event of any direct outreach from anti-union forces such as phone calls or door-knockers, members should reply strongly and simply: "No thanks. I'm sticking with my union." Then end the conversation.
  • DON'T forward along any emails or publicly post any content from mailers. We don't want to help the Freedom Foundation spread its anti-union messages.
Resources from NYSUT:
  • We have worked up a one-pager that covers much of this information about the current anti-union efforts.
  • Additionally, we have revised our Fight Back website.

2022-2023 Hamburg Retirees

2023 Retirement Video by aforrest
On Wednesday, June 14th, the HTA hosted our annual HTA Retirement celebration at Mangia.   This year we had nine retirees in attendance, along with many current colleagues, retired colleagues, family, and friends.
Congratulations to all of our retirees.   We wish you the best during this next chapter of life!

The representative assembly recently voted on a new logo for the HTA.   The following design garnered the majority of the votes and will now be our new logo!

Thank you to all those representatives who voted.

The Hamburg Teachers’ Association is proud to recognize Sandra Wittmeyer as this year’s NYSUT Leadership Award recipient.
Due in large part to her kind nature, diligent work ethic, and thoroughness, Sandy has served numerous leadership roles throughout her tenure in the Hamburg Central School District.
Prior to Sandy’s service as an HTA building representative, she served as a NYSUT/AFT delegate alternate.   Sandy’s appointment to the Contract Committee at her building paved the way to her current role as a Negotiations Committee member for the district.
Once appointed building representative, Sandy quickly ascended up the leadership ladder and was elected secretary of the HTA.  Whilst acting secretary, Sandy also volunteered her time to chair the HTA Scholarship Committee.   Currently, Sandy serves the Hamburg Teachers’ Association as acting treasurer and chair of the HTA Budget Committee.
The HTA is so grateful for Sandy’s hard work, leadership, and desire to serve our members.  She is always striving to better herself and                               thus, the union as a whole.
Congratulations on this prestigious honor, Sandy.

To help pass legislation that provides a solid foundation for Future Forward, we need all our e-activists to commit to champion at least one of the five pillars that define Future Forward: - Public schools as the centers of our communities; - Support students' social-emotional needs; - Fight for racial justice; - De-emphasize high-stakes testing; - Adopt best practices for instruction and technology. Take Action NOW on the MAC to tell us which of these five pillars you feel inspired to advocate for!
